Patient Guide to Mammography
What is Mammography?

Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast. Mammography plays a major role in the early detection of breast cancers.

The digital mammography equipment that MDI uses means a clearer image is produced, meaning more accurate results.

It has been shown that the number of deaths from breast cancer in the 50-64 age group are reduced by 40% in those who attend screening.

Further investigation of breast lesions may need to be performed with ultrasound or MRI.

Is it safe?

Mammography does use low energy X-rays, however digital mammography scanners minimise the dose of X-rays used.

The fact that the image can be manipulated after the scan has been performed, means there is less need for repeat scans for poor images.

Your appointment

When you arrive you will be asked to fill in a few forms relating to your scan, after completing the forms you will be asked to change into a gown and your belongings will be locked away safely.

The Radiographer (person who operates the equipment) will take you into the scan room.

In order to obtain good quality standard images, the breast tissue has to be compressed between two smooth plates for the X-ray to be taken. It is usual to do this in two planes, but sometimes further views of a specific area of the breast tissue may be required to assess the area better. This usually occurs only after the radiologist has reviewed the initial mammograms.

When will I get the result?

The images will be looked at by an expert radiologist using extremely high definition monitors and the result will be sent to the doctor who referred you. The abnormalities being sought are often very tiny and therefore the radiologist will need time to study and report the images and you will not be able to receive your result straight away.

A film copy will be available for you to take away when you leave. Please take this with you when you go back to your doctor or specialist.
