Who should consider Coronary CT Angiography?
Asymptomatic patients with high-risk profiles for coronary artery disease. Patients with one or two of the following risks factors should therefore contact their GP to see if they should be referred:
  • Hypertension

  • Hyperlipidemia

  • Diabetes

  • Smoking

  • Peripheral vascular disease

  • Family history of heart disease

  • Patients with atypical chest pain (right side, shoulder tip etc ...)

  • Patients with unclear or inconclusive stress test (treadmill test) results

  • Patients with suspected anomalous coronary arteries, ectasia or aneurysms

  • Patients whose status of bypass graft needs to be assessed

  • Patients with stents. CTA is an excellent tool for assessing in-stent lumens.

A CTA scan can provide important insights into the extent and nature of plaque formation with or without any narrowing of the coronary arteries. The CTA scan’s most common use is to rule out or rule in Coronary Artery Disease in patients with one or two risk factors.
